Few words about Sung-hoon Koo, PhD:
Dr. Sung-hoon Koo is President and Chief Executive Officer of Samsung Securities, a leading Korean investment company providing financial services ranging from brokerage, wealth management and investment advisory to corporate finance and trading.
For more than three decades, Dr. Koo has worked for Samsung Group, serving in a number of capacities at various financial affiliates. From 2015 to Feb 2018, he was President & Chief Executive Officer of Samsung Asset Management where he adopted stewardship code for the first time amongst Korean asset managers. Dr. KOO had played an important part in leading the industry task force for stewardship code since April 2015 and establishing Korean official stewardship code in December 2016. He also planned and supported the first ‘Stewardship Forum’ held in Korea on September 2017, where Korean regulators and major financial companies including members of Asia Corporate Governance Association (ACGA) participated in. He had devoted his efforts to the settlement of stewardship code in the Korean asset management industry, creating a fully dedicated stewardship team, first-ever amongst Korean asset managers. Samsung Asset Management is still participating as the active member of Committee on Stewardship Code Development in Korea.
From 2012 to 2014, he was Chief Investment Officer and Executive Vice President of Samsung Life Insurance. From 2004 to 2008 and then 2010 to 2012, he was Head of the Investments Division at Samsung Life, where he led global securities investments. Between these two terms, he served as Head of the Credit Analysis Team, controlling the overall credit quality of domestic and overseas exposure as the company navigated the 2008 global financial crisis. In 2003, He was CIO of Separate Account Team. From 1998 to 2002, he was General Manager of the Asset Allocation Team and Head of the Alternate Investments Team, where he ran an alternative investment group and managed private equity and hedge fund investments. From 1992 to 1997, as Manager at the Office of the Executive Staff of Samsung Group, he worked for Group Treasurer, planned overseas investment strategies for Samsung’s financial Businesses and undertook various business developments along with mergers and acquisitions in the financial sector. He joined Samsung Group in 1987 as a financial market researcher, a BOK watcher at Samsung Economic Research Institute.
Dr. Koo holds B.A. (1984) and M.A. (1986) degrees in economics and a Ph.D. (1998) in economics from Korea University. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on Corporate Governance of Commercial Banks in Korea.
