“In Peru, we play frontón, which is quite similar to squash but we practise out in the sun. Since in my family, we have had cases of skin cancer, my mom decided I should try badminton. I was really fond of frontón, but after first trying badminton, there was no turning back! I was thrilled! I was six. I have played in singles and in doubles. I loved singles because you are on your own and have to push your limits to win. Playing doubles is like attending a human resources class. You have to learn to deal with someone else’s way of playing and behaving. It’s very challenging. The matches last from 45 minutes to an hour, so it’s also a very mental game. You must always be on the run, remain concentrated whether you are winning or losing because the game can easily turn around. Thanks to my team, since I was 8, I have travelled a lot across the Americas and Europe for training. I’m proud to say that I was single and double champion several times and always made it to the podium during the Panamerican Games. My dream was to go to the Olympics. But this wish remained unfulfilled. At EDHEC, there is a badminton team. I missed the try-outs, but I intend to contact the coach and let him know I’m available if the team needs extra players. If not, I will try and join the team in my M2 year!”
