The first question asked by Marie de Vergès, a journalist at Le Monde, in this interview, and Bertrand Monnet's answer are as follows:

"Oil production has declined massively in 2022 in Nigeria, in part because of crude siphoned off along pipelines. Who are these oil thieves?

We are talking about tens of thousands of people simply from local communities. Most of the time, these people live on this because they can't live on anything else. In the Niger Delta, the misery is absolute. Life expectancy is 47 years, whereas in this region one should live like in Kuwait or Azerbaijan. Yet Nigerian law requires that 13% of oil revenues be paid back to the oil-producing states. But on the spot, one can only observe that the wealth is not redistributed at all..."
