Xin MA - MSc in Marketing Management

After completing her undergraduate studies in Business English, Xin MA developed a keen interest in marketing and social media, gaining substantial experience in the field. In 2024, she joined EDHEC’s MSc in Marketing Management programme to enhance her professional expertise. She was particularly drawn to the programme’s Luxury and Fashion specialisation, as well as EDHEC’s robust career services and alumni network, ranked #1 (FT 2024). Here, she shares her application journey, insights, and reflections on her studies at EDHEC.

What was your academic background before EDHEC?

I majored in Business English during my undergraduate studies. After graduation, I discovered my passion for marketing and the social media industry. I started managing my social media accounts and I’ve also collaborated with multiple international brands on marketing campaigns. These experiences fueled my enthusiasm for marketing. However, I realised I lacked systematic knowledge in marketing management, which led me to pursue EDHEC’s MSc in Marketing Management to gain structured and advanced knowledge in the field.

Why did you choose EDHEC?

Before applying to French business schools, I had limited knowledge of them, so I conducted extensive research. EDHEC stood out for its stellar reputation and rankings. Its Marketing Management programme is among the best globally.

Given my work in social media, which closely relates to fashion, I have a strong interest in the luxury and fashion industry. EDHEC’s Marketing Management programme offers a specialised track in Luxury and Fashion, which many other schools do not. This was a key factor in my decision.
Additionally, EDHEC provides abundant resources. According to the 2024 Financial Times rankings, its Career Centre is ranked first in France. From alumni feedback, I learned about EDHEC’s high administrative efficiency and excellent faculty, which reassured me that this programme would meet my expectations.

Why did you choose your current Master’s programme?

After working in the social media industry and collaborating with various brands, I’ve gained significant experience as an influencer. Despite my passion for fashion and marketing, I realised I lacked systematic and internationally oriented knowledge in marketing. I aspire to deepen my expertise in this field.

The MSc programme’s short duration is ideal for professionals like me who want to efficiently enhance their skills. Furthermore, the programme includes an internship, enabling us to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world business scenarios.

After forming this goal, I conducted thorough research and had in-depth conversations with an EDHEC alumnus. These interactions confirmed that this programme was the best fit for me.

How did you learn about the EDHEC Future China Alumni Impact Scholarship?

I learned about the scholarship through EDHEC alumni and found it perfectly suited to me. During the application process, many alumni offered me generous support. I hope to reciprocate as a member of EDHEC’s China Alumni network by helping future students.

Was the application process for this scholarship difficult?

The process was relatively straightforward. After receiving an offer of admission, applicants can apply for the China Alumni Impact Scholarship. This involves submitting an essay detailing their motivation and how they align with the scholarship, as well as how they would leverage their experience and resources to enhance EDHEC’s influence and support future alumni. Applicants are also required to record a video and participate in a Q&A interview.

How has receiving this scholarship benefited you?

Receiving the scholarship provided not only financial support but also an invaluable opportunity to contribute to EDHEC’s community. It has allowed me to use my experience to assist future EDHEC students.

What was your first impression of EDHEC?

When I first interacted with EDHEC, I was impressed by its dedication to students. From visa applications to administrative processes in France, as well as accommodation arrangements and addressing any issues we might face, the school provided comprehensive and efficient support.

Before coming here, I had read some negative reviews online about the quality of courses at business schools and their administrative inefficiency, along with claims that some professors were not friendly to Chinese students. However, my experience at EDHEC has been the opposite. The courses are intensive and fast-paced, requiring significant self-study. Moreover, the professors and classmates are very supportive, creating a welcoming environment.

The Lille campus is beautiful, with excellent facilities and vibrant student activities, including sports clubs and events.

What is the teaching approach and curriculum of your MSc programme like?

The programme is highly practical. Professors provide theoretical instruction during classes, complemented by related group projects with guidance and support. The curriculum is highly applicable, covering tools like SPSS and Tableau.

Beyond coursework, the school organises company visits and learning projects. The Career Centre has been instrumental, offering support and opportunities such as the INSIDE LVMH course, which I recently completed to earn a certification. This course provided valuable industry insights and enhanced my resume.

Have you interacted with faculty and staff? What did you discuss?

I recently had an in-depth discussion with Dr. Hua Ariel Li, the programme director of the MSc in Marketing Management, about my Master’s thesis. The school places a strong emphasis on practical skills. In addition to the traditional thesis format, EDHEC offers a “Market Consultancy Project” option, allowing groups of three to address real-world business challenges. This experience sharpens our analytical, data integration, and strategic thinking skills.

What are your impressions of the Lille campus?

The Lille campus is stunning, featuring well-designed buildings, lush green spaces, and excellent facilities like a swimming pool and gym. It provides a perfect environment for both academic and extracurricular activities.

Was it easy to adapt to life and study in France?

Adapting to life in France had its challenges initially. The slower pace of administration and relaxed lifestyle contrasted with the fast-paced convenience I was accustomed to in China. Language barriers also posed some difficulties, especially in Lille, where many locals do not speak English. I recommend learning basic French before arriving to make daily life easier. However, after two weeks, I felt fully integrated.

In terms of academics, the teaching methods differ from China. French professors emphasise practical skills, and assessments are mostly project-based, fostering teamwork and collaboration.

What are your future plans and aspirations (academic, professional, personal)?

Professionally, I plan to leverage the resources provided by EDHEC’s Career Centre. With its extensive recruitment events and support, I aim to explore opportunities aligning with my career goals. Additionally, I intend to network with alumni, whose connections are invaluable for career advancement.

What advice do you have for students applying to your programme?

Firstly, start your application early, as marketing programmes are highly competitive. Early preparation can prevent issues like limited spots. The Luxury and Fashion specialisation, in particular, is highly sought after, so acting quickly is crucial.

Secondly, the MSc programme is fast-paced. I recommend having a clear career plan in advance and maximizing the Career Centre’s resources. For those considering staying in France, improving your French is essential for integration and job opportunities.
