Unlocking Career Paths: Alumni Insights from EDHEC’s MSc in Corporate Finance & Banking Workshop
EDHEC’s MSc in Corporate Finance & Banking programme recently organised an engaging alumni workshop featuring three accomplished graduates: Valentine Guerni from Société Générale, Julia Leary from Bank of America, and Aurélien Neth from Eight Advisory. Current student Mattia Spano shared his experience, highlighting the invaluable career insights, practical advice, and networking opportunities the event offered.
Can you introduce yourself and share why you chose the MSc in Corporate Finance and Banking at EDHEC?
I’m Mattia Spano, originally from Italy, and I hold a bachelor’s degree in Economic Science for Finance from Cattolica University in Milan. I chose EDHEC’s MSc in Corporate Finance & Banking programme because it perfectly aligns with my long-term goal of starting my own company. The programme’s emphasis on M&A and strategic consulting offers invaluable insights into company operations and strategy. Moreover, EDHEC’s outstanding reputation for its Masters in Finance programmes and its stunning seaside location on the French Riviera made it an easy choice.
Can you describe the alumni workshop you attended and its format?
The workshop was incredibly inspiring. We had the chance to meet EDHEC Alumni who shared insights about their professional journeys and the hiring process. The format, which featured three alumni, encouraged engaging dialogue. They compared their career paths, highlighting differences between European and international trajectories. This diversity provided a broad perspective on potential opportunities. The format included a Q&A segment and opportunities to interact informally. Having direct access to professionals is invaluable for seeking advice and expanding my network.
What was the main objective of the event?
The primary goal was to inspire students by showcasing the success of EDHEC Alumni. Seeing professionals in roles we aspire to is highly motivating. It also encouraged networking, with alumni being approachable and open to sharing advice or referrals.
Did the event meet your expectations?
Absolutely. EDHEC regularly organises similar events, and I attend as many as possible. A recent session with an entrepreneur was particularly relevant, given my interest in starting my own business. These events offer practical insights and highlight the challenges and opportunities in various career paths.
What specific insights did you take away to help achieve your career goals?
The biggest takeaway was the importance of networking. I used to rely primarily on online applications, but the Alumni emphasised building personal connections through LinkedIn, seeking referrals, and actively reaching out. This advice has already changed how I approach job applications, especially for roles in larger firms.
If you had to summarise the workshop in three words, what would they be?
Interesting, inspiring, and useful.
What would you tell prospective students about these events?
These workshops are not one-off opportunities. EDHEC frequently facilitates interactions with professionals, enriching the learning experience by offering exposure to real-world insights, financial trends, and peer-to-peer learning. As someone who values networking, I recently founded The Debate Club at EDHEC to further expand opportunities for students to connect. In January, we’re hosting our first Master-MBA networking event, which will bring together students from different programmes to build meaningful professional connections. This holistic approach to networking and professional growth truly sets EDHEC apart and makes its programmes unique.
